Litecoin (LTC) suffered an unusual 13-block reorganization early Sunday morning UTC after a denial-of-service vector forced miners and node operators to abandon a stalled tip and converge on a deeper alternative chain. Litecoin Core lead developer David Burkett described the event in a post-mortem as "consistent with a sophisticated DoS rather than a zero-day exploit," but GitHub commit history showed an emergency patch landed roughly four hours before the public disclosure.
LTC traded at $74.20 on Sunday morning, down 7.4% on the day and erasing the 9.2% gain that had been booked through the prior week. Volume surged to $2.1 billion in the 24 hours surrounding the reorg — the highest single-day figure since the November 2024 halving event.
What Actually Happened
According to network analytics from Forkmonitor, blocks 2,810,422 through 2,810,434 were rolled back across major mining pools after a roughly 38-minute period in which two competing chain tips coexisted with comparable proof-of-work weights. Such reorganizations longer than six blocks are extremely rare on Litecoin, with the previous record being four blocks in March 2019.
Mining pool ViaBTC, which controls roughly 22% of Litecoin's hashrate, briefly published a tip at block 2,810,433 before reverting to the chain that ultimately won out. F2Pool and Antpool, which together account for 51% of hashrate, never confirmed the orphaned chain, suggesting the attacker was unable to bribe a controlling majority.
Disclosure Concerns
Critics including Casa CSO Jameson Lopp pointed to a sequence of GitHub commits to the litecoin-project/litecoin repository that landed at 02:43 UTC — well before the formal post-mortem published at 06:35 UTC. The commits patched a node-side mempool bottleneck consistent with the DoS vector. "Either this was a zero-day, or the maintainers had foreknowledge of the attack surface," Lopp wrote on X. Litecoin Foundation managing director Charlie Lee responded that the patch had been in private testing for 11 days and that timing was coincidental.
