KeyCorp delivered a sharply better-than-expected first-quarter 2026 performance on Wednesday, reporting net income of $486 million, or $0.44 per diluted share — a 33% increase from the year-ago period — as the Cleveland-based regional bank saw its core revenue drivers accelerate simultaneously. Total revenue of $1.95 billion, up 10% year-over-year, comfortably exceeded the $1.83 billion consensus, led by an 11% surge in net interest income.
CEO Chris Gorman characterized the results as evidence that KeyCorp's multi-year balance sheet repositioning strategy — which involved deliberately shedding lower-yielding securities and reinvesting at higher rates — is delivering the financial benefits management promised investors. The bank's net interest margin expanded to 2.75% from 2.52% a year ago, a 23-basis-point improvement that was among the largest in the regional banking peer group.
Non-Interest Income Also Beats
Non-interest income increased 8% to $736 million, driven by investment banking fees that rose 35% as corporate clients in KeyCorp's core middle-market focus areas accelerated M&A and refinancing activity. Consumer mortgage originations also recovered, rising 22% from the year-ago period as mortgage rates declined from their peak levels of late 2025.
Credit quality remained solid despite the challenging macro environment, with the net charge-off ratio of 0.43% coming in below management's guidance range of 0.45%-0.55%. Nonperforming assets declined for the second consecutive quarter, a trend management expects to continue as commercial real estate loan modifications made in 2024 and 2025 continue to perform.
Regional Banking Sector Outlook Brightens
KeyCorp's strong results follow similarly positive reports from Regions Financial, Truist, and Citizens Financial, suggesting that the regional banking sector has turned a corner after two years of net interest income compression. The KBW Regional Banking Index has gained 11% year-to-date, outpacing the major money center banks.
Shares of KEY surged 5.8% following the earnings release, their best single-day gain since Q3 2024. Management provided full-year guidance for NII growth of 8%-11% and revenue growth of 7%-10%, above the consensus at both measures. Analysts at UBS and Piper Sandler upgraded their ratings to Buy, citing the earnings recovery trajectory and historically attractive valuation.
