Coinbase Global shares climbed to a record closing high of $410.20 on Friday ahead of the cryptocurrency exchange's first-quarter earnings report scheduled for Tuesday after the close. Wall Street consensus calls for revenue of $2.41 billion and earnings per share of $2.18, with both figures suggesting record-setting performance driven by 78% year-over-year growth in retail trading volume.
The stock has gained 31% year-to-date, outperforming the S&P 500 by more than 26 percentage points and trouncing the broader Nasdaq Composite. Coinbase is now the 91st largest U.S. company by market capitalization at $98 billion, having recently been added to the S&P 500 in a long-anticipated index inclusion that triggered substantial passive demand.
Subscription Revenue Crosses $750 Million
Of particular interest to investors is Coinbase's subscription and services segment, which Wall Street expects to generate $752 million in Q1 — up from $511 million a year earlier. The segment, which includes USDC stablecoin partnership economics, staking rewards, and Base Layer-2 sequencer revenue, has emerged as the most reliable and highest-margin revenue line. Mizuho Securities estimates segment operating margin exceeds 78%.
USDC supply on Coinbase has grown to roughly 64% of total Circle issuance, up from 49% a year ago, as Coinbase Prime's institutional treasury management product gained share. The platform now reports $46 billion in custodied USDC across retail and institutional accounts. Base, Coinbase's Layer-2 network, generated approximately $108 million in sequencer revenue in Q1 according to on-chain data tracker DefiLlama.
Derivatives Push Accelerates
Coinbase's recent Deribit acquisition, completed in March for approximately $4.2 billion, makes it the largest cryptocurrency derivatives venue globally for the first time. Deribit's Bitcoin and Ethereum options open interest topped $52 billion at quarter-end, providing Coinbase with high-margin recurring revenue to complement its more volatile spot trading business.
JPMorgan analyst Kenneth Worthington lifted his Coinbase price target to $480 from $420 and maintained an Overweight rating, citing what he described as "the most diversified revenue mix in Coinbase's history." Bears continue to flag valuation, with the stock trading at 32x forward earnings versus a long-term average closer to 22x. Options markets are pricing in a 7.4% post-earnings move, with skew tilted slightly to the downside.
