Bank of New York Mellon Corporation reported first-quarter 2026 total revenue of $4.79 billion, up 9% year-over-year, with earnings per share of $1.58 beating the $1.47 Wall Street consensus. The world's largest custodian bank saw assets under custody and administration reach a record $53.1 trillion, a 12% increase from a year ago, fueled by rising equity valuations and robust net new business wins from institutional asset managers and sovereign wealth funds.
CEO Robin Vince highlighted BNY's ongoing transformation from a traditional custody bank into a technology and data platform company. The firm has deployed more than 200 proprietary AI applications across its operations, which Vince said contributed to a 4% reduction in non-compensation expenses while simultaneously improving processing accuracy rates.
Fee Revenue Leads Growth
Investment services fees, BNY's largest revenue line, increased 8% to $2.3 billion, driven by securities lending activity that surged 19% as market volatility created strong demand from hedge funds and fixed income managers. Asset and wealth management revenue grew 11% to $948 million, reflecting higher average market levels and continued net inflows into money market and alternative investment products.
Net interest revenue rose 6% to $1.1 billion as the firm benefited from higher-yielding reinvestment of maturing securities and strong deposit repricing. Return on tangible common equity improved to 24.8% from 22.3% a year ago, outperforming most large bank peers and validating BNY's capital-light business model.
Capital Return and Outlook
BNY repurchased $800 million in common stock during Q1 and increased its quarterly dividend to $0.47 per share, a 9% increase. Management maintained full-year guidance for mid-to-high single-digit revenue growth and continued margin expansion. The company is also investing $450 million in its digital asset infrastructure, including a new tokenized asset custody platform expected to launch in Q3 2026.
Shares of BNY rose 3.1% on the earnings beat. Wall Street analysts view the custodian as a beneficiary of both continued market growth and institutional adoption of tokenized real-world assets, a market BNY projects could represent $16 trillion in assets under custody within five years.
