Korea exports jumped 85.9% in the first 10 days of June, giving investors another hard data point on the strength of AI chip demand. The headline number was powered by semiconductors, which more than tripled from a year earlier.
The export surge is bullish for Korea's economy, but it lands in a nervous market. Korean equities have been one of the biggest winners of the global AI trade, and that makes them exposed when AI stocks sell off.
What happened
Korea Times and other local reports cited Korea Customs Service data showing exports reached $28.6 billion from June 1 to June 10, up 85.9% from a year earlier. Semiconductor exports rose 205.8% to about $11.07 billion.
Aju Press said chip shipments were the highest ever for the June 1-10 period and accounted for 38.7% of total exports. Xinhua reported daily average exports rose 46.1% to $4.09 billion.
Why Korea exports matter
The primary keyword is Korea exports because South Korea is one of the cleanest real-economy gauges for AI hardware demand. If chip exports keep accelerating, it supports earnings for memory, equipment and supply-chain companies.
Market impact
Strong export data helps the macro case for Korea, but it did not fully offset the regional equity selloff. Reuters-linked reporting said the Kospi dropped as much as 3% on Thursday as AI valuation worries and oil risk hit sentiment.
