IonQ Inc. (IONQ) shares surged 22.4% to $48.30 on Thursday after the company disclosed a $1.2 billion sole-source contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to design, build and operate a 4,096-physical-qubit trapped-ion quantum computing cluster at an undisclosed underground military facility. The award represents the largest single quantum procurement on public record and runs through fiscal 2030 with optional extension years totaling another $1.4 billion.
The contract is structured under DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Phase III and is conditioned on demonstrating quantum advantage on cryptanalytic and chemistry workloads against the best-available classical baselines by end-2027. Logical qubit count after error correction is targeted at 256 — sufficient, according to DARPA program manager Dr. Joseph Altepeter, to "fundamentally alter the cybersecurity threat landscape if the architecture proves out."
